Powerful Truck Mounted Equipment

vs

Your Do-It-Yourself Portable Carpet Cleaners

That small carpet cleaning machine which you may have tucked away in your closet is ideal for immediately taking care of a little accident after someone gets sick or spills a little something.

However...

Now you want several rooms of carpet cleaned and somewhere in the back of your mind you've asked yourself, “Can't I just do this myself?”  Well, here we're going to discuss the ins and outs of carpet cleaning and why doing it yourself... would become your Biggest Nightmare!

1st off, let's talk equipment...

Brent's:

What we use to clean your carpet, is a Professional Truck Mounted, "Steam" Cleaning Extraction System, Powered by a Gasoline-Run Nissan, 4 Cylinder, 32 Horsepower Liquid Cooled Engine.  It Heats the Water, through 4 Onboard Heat Exchangers and brings in an Average Water Temperature of around 225-250 degrees and Simultaneously Extracts Back Out over 90% of what it puts down.  Now, we could put all sorts of technical terms in here, but suffice to say, the Water is Really Hot and the Vacuum is Really Strong!

DIY:

Now let's address the Rental Equipment that you see at the Supermarket, or the Big Box Stores like Home Depot or Lowes.

  • First, you have to go to the store and schlep all the equipment, tools, hoses, bottles of soaps and special spotters, etc. out to your car.
  • Then, you have to figure out how to get it all into your trunk without scratching your paint, denting anything or throwing out your back.
  • Once you finally get home you have to muscle all of it up and into your house.
  • Now, before you can get started cleaning, don't forget to flush the hot water lines because you don't know what the heck the last guy used on his carpet and is still left in them (i.e., bleach, dye, Head & Shoulders, etc.)!

Next, let's talk about power.

Those in-home carpet cleaners or rental machines, run on a small electric motor and vacuum.  Why?  Because they plug into your electrical outlet and those are usually 15 amp circuits.  They're not very powerful, or you would have to keep running into the basement every 5 minutes to reset the circuit breakers.

As for the Hot Water?

Well, because these machines don't Heat the Water for you, you'll be filling up buckets with Hot Water from your bathtub.  Now, since you don't want to walk into a scalding shower, your Hot Water heater probably isn't turned up full blast, so how Hot will it actually be?  Oh, by the way, Water Weighs 8.35 pounds per gallon. That means if you are using a 5-Gallon Bucket, each bucket will weigh 42.7 pounds. So, once you fill up your buckets, you get to carry them, sloshing this Hot Water all over yourself as you bring them to the machine and awkwardly pour them in, trying not to spill it on your carpet and over saturate it. PLUS, don't forget, you get to do this in reverse with the Dirty Water too! You get to carry the all the Dirty Water, sloshing back through your home to the bathroom, so you can dump it in your toilet (and maybe a little on the floor too). Also, these machines don't keep the water Hot for you. The water will be cooling off as you are filling the machine and while you are cleaning, so it will be the hottest at the back of your home, which usually is the cleanest carpet and tepid at the front, where your carpet is always the dirtiest.

What does this mean to you?

Well, in a nutshell, the hotter the water, the more effective the cleaning agents, the cleaner the carpet. When the water temperature varies so does the cleaning result. As the water cools, the carpet does not clean as well.

Now, since the vacuum on these types of machines aren't that strong, they can leave a carpet really wet which means it may take days to dry.  We don't want to get into a science lesson here, but since water weighs over 8 pounds per gallon.  If you put it on your carpet, you better have something strong enough to pull it back out!

Next, Let's talk Cleaning Agents...

Brent's:

We use some of the highest grade, advanced formulations of complex cleaning compounds.  Many of our detergents are bio-degradable and environmentally friendly.  The cleaning detergents we use on your carpets are low to no residue and will not re-attract soil or change the 'feel' of your carpet.  We have a wide assortment of professional strength compounds on the truck to handle your cleaning, odor and protection needs.  With 45 years of experience, Jeff knows just what to use for your carpet and upholstery to bring them back to the best condition possible.

DYI:

At the store, where you rented the machine...

Soap.  Well, we really don't know what else to tell you.  Most of what you find at the store to use with those machines are just simple soaps, that a consumer can use without getting themselves in too much trouble.  They tend to be higher sudsing, to work and as such leave a lot of soapy residue in the carpet.

What does that mean to you?

When sticky soaps dry in your carpet they attract all kinds of dirt and rapidly re-soil.  Think shampooing your hair in the shower and then stepping out without rinsing it.  Yuck!

The Bottom Line...
